Board adopts changes to corrective-and-disciplinary policy after debate over Administrative Coordinator authority

The Vernon County Board adopted Resolution 2025-01 to revise Policy No. 205 (Corrective & Disciplinary Actions), updating language to reflect the Administrative Coordinator's authority in administering discipline for appointed department heads.
Administrative Coordinator Cassandra Hanan presented the change. Chair Lorn Goede said he opposed the proposed changes and "would like to see the job description changed to match the policy," arguing the Board should be kept informed on discipline involving department heads. Supporters, including Supervisor Taylor and Supervisor Lawler, said the revision creates necessary clarity and preserves the Board's impartiality in personnel matters. Supervisor Slack said, "we hired an Administrative Coordinator to do a job, let’s let her do it." Corporation Counsel cautioned that some disciplinary matters raise confidentiality and liability concerns.
On a roll-call vote the resolution passed with 13 ayes, 3 nays and 3 absent; Supervisors Goede, Beitlich and Muller recorded no votes.
