Viroqua residents press Vernon County supervisors to halt planned landfill expansion

During the public-comment portion of the Vernon County Board of Supervisors meeting on May 15, multiple residents told supervisors they oppose a proposed expansion of the county landfill. Kathleen Kroska of Viroqua questioned the financial planning for the expansion, while Philathea Bezin of the Town of Kickapoo said many products currently sent to the landfill could be recycled rather than buried.
Lori Harms, also of Viroqua, told the board she did not believe supervisors understood karst geology and said the board was "ignoring the science," raising concerns about groundwater risk near karst formations. KJ Jakobson argued the feasibility projections provided to the board were inaccurate and suggested forming a statutorily prescribed waste-management board with set rates to preserve local control. Tom Roepke cited both economic and environmental reasons for opposing the project; these public comments were audible to the board and placed the landfill expansion in active public scrutiny. The administrative report later noted a meeting scheduled with the DNR to discuss the landfill feasibility study.
