Police seek DOJ vest grant to replace ballistic vests; replacements average 12–14 annually

Deputy Chief Tony Ashley told council the department applies annually for the DOJ bulletproof vest grant and has been accepted in prior years. "This grant, we apply for it every year, and we've been accepted for quite a few years now... it's for our replacement vests and any new vests, and we get a 50% reimbursement from this grant," Ashley said.
Ashley estimated the department needs about 12–14 replacement vests annually plus three to four vests for new hires, and said current replacement cost is approaching $2,000 per vest and that vests have a five-year expiration schedule. Council had no objections to advancing the application to the Monday agenda.
