Highland Village CDC accepts corrected size and directs staff to proceed with Doubletree Ranch Park shade project
Summary
Staff corrected an earlier slide: the planned shade structure footprint is 30-by-30 (the turf area remains 50-by-50). Board members raised concerns about lost shade, cost and future use but raised no objection to continuing with the project.

The Highland Village Community Development Corporation heard a correction to plans for a shade structure at Doubletree Ranch Park and directed staff to continue with the previously approved project.
At the meeting, a staff presenter explained that a slide in an earlier presentation incorrectly listed the new shade structure as 50-by-50; the presenter said the actual structure is 30-by-30 while the overall turf area is 50-by-50. The presenter explained that existing concrete footers from the prior structure will not be removed but will be cut below grade and filled; turf will be patched by the original installer. (Speaker listed as Staff member in the board roster.)
Board members questioned whether the smaller footprint will reduce available shade and discussed whether the chess pieces that previously occupied the area would be returned. The staff presenter said there are no plans to restore the chess pieces at this time and that the structure is intended primarily as a shaded seating area for playground users and occasional classes. One Committee member said the structure "is a very expensive shade area" and asked whether rental or other uses might justify the cost; another noted shade is scarce and useful at the facility.
The presenter confirmed the corrected cost figures in discussion: the agenda briefing was cited as the authoritative source and during the meeting staff offered two cost figures in oral comment ($61,008.50 and later $61,810.58). Board members asked staff to confirm the precise budget line in the agenda packet. The presenter said the original installer has successfully patched turf previously and that patches should hold up.
Staff asked for a recommendation to continue with the previously approved project and to note the size correction; the Chair asked if anyone objected and no objections were raised. No formal motion was required, and staff will proceed with project steps and update the board as the work progresses.
Ending: Staff will finalize and confirm the exact contract/cost number in the agenda briefing and proceed with the approved project and corrected dimensions.
