Billings County adopts 2026 burn restrictions as fire danger rises

The resolution lays out specific limits: "No recreational, Ag, or Industrial Travel is to be allowed off of surfaced roadways when the ND Fire Danger is in Very High, Extreme or Red flag conditions," and it restricts campfires and smoking outside designated areas. The resolution also notes penalties under North Dakota Century Code 37-17.1-10 for willful violations, which the resolution describes as a Class B misdemeanor with potential fines and restitution for suppression costs.
Emergency Manager Kyle Shockley and county leaders said the measure is intended to reduce the risk to citizens and property during periods of elevated fire danger. Commissioner Steven Klym moved to approve the resolution; Commissioner James Haag seconded and the board voted unanimously to adopt it.
Auditor Marcia Kessel directed residents to current burn restriction maps and status at www.ndresponse.gov under the Wildland Fire tab and urged adherence to local guidance.
