At the Aug. 28 Administrative Services Committee meeting, city staff recommended using written briefings from boards and commissions as an alternative to requiring every board to present at council work sessions.
Phil told the committee that with 21 boards on the roster, a mandatory in‑person update schedule would likely overwhelm work sessions. “If the council wishes to do that we will definitely support that but we feel like that may become cumbersome,” he said, recommending written briefings prepared with staff liaisons that could be placed on the agenda and pulled for discussion if questions arise.
Committee members responded that boards should be offered the opportunity to present to full council if they wish, and that many boards already make scheduled presentations (for example, the North Texas Municipal Water District board). One member said the option to present would help appointees explain their work to the public and recommended staff reach out to boards to gauge interest before drafting a broader schedule.
Staff agreed to consult with board liaisons and report back to the full council with recommendations about which boards should present and which should submit written reports.
