Kaufman County judge pitches regional housing authority to manage vouchers

Kaufman County Judge Jakey Allen described a regional housing authority plan intended to manage federal housing vouchers across the county and the seven-county HUD region. Allen said Kaufman County now has a very large number of certified voucher households and that the authority would allow local officials more control over how vouchers are administered and where voucher-assisted households locate.
"We would like to share the expenses with Forney and Bridal to support 1 employee for the 1st year," Judge Allen said, adding that the federal government would reimburse those salaries after vouchers and administrative processes are in place. He emphasized the county will need HUD approval before fully implementing the program and that the commissioners court would appoint board members for the authority. Council members asked whether a local authority would change communications and porting practices with the Dallas Housing Authority; Allen said HUD had expressed willingness to work with the county but that the county must await formal approval.
