Kalkaska County commissioners convened a special workshop on Oct. 23 to continue work on the county’s 2025 budget and to note the appointment of a county administrator. Chair Kohn Fisher called the meeting to order at 5:09 p.m. in the County Administration Building; present were Commissioners Robert Baldwin, Truman Bicum, Kohn Fisher, Scott Matley (who left at 5:20 p.m.), and Jeff Sieting. Commissioner James Sweet was absent.
County Administrator David Schaeffer told the board staff were in “continued preparation and review for 2025 Budget” and presented narrative materials for the commissioners’ consideration. Schaeffer described the budget as complex and flagged multiple items that will require further review as staff refine figures ahead of the formal November meeting.
The workshop covered department narratives and preliminary requests across several offices. Commissioners discussed next steps for reviewing final amounts and set the expectation the board would re-evaluate totals at its November meeting. The session concluded with a motion to adjourn at 7:25 p.m.; the motion passed 6–0 with one member absent.
