EDA denies temporary Market 5 rent relief requests, cites fairness concerns

The Economic Development Authority voted Jan. 8 to deny a request from two Market 5 tenants seeking temporary rent relief for the shoulder months of January through March. Cynthia Boone summarized two written requests asking that monthly rent be cut from $450 to $225 due to reduced winter foot traffic; neither tenant attended the meeting.
Board members raised fairness and precedent concerns. Travis Johnston said relief for some tenants could require extending the same benefit to all, and David Boroughs warned that agreed-upon relief could invite additional or larger future requests. Adriane Hicks said $450 monthly rent was not a large amount and opposed making exceptions. Chairman Arnold Brown moved to deny the requests and maintain existing lease terms; the motion passed unanimously.
