EDA approves Market 5 sublease for Sweet Hummingbird Bakery

The Economic Development Authority approved a Market 5 sublease for Sweet Hummingbird Bakery on Jan. 8, voting unanimously to accept the tenant’s agreement. Angela Burton introduced herself to the Board and described her background: a longtime baker who established the business in 2022 and currently operates under a cottage food license while serving as an active-duty Army acquisition officer stationed at Fort Lee.
Ms. Burton told the Board she would prepare items at home and deliver fresh baked goods on the days she attends Market 5, generally on weekends. She said certain items requiring time-and-temperature controls (for example cheesecakes) are excluded under the cottage food law, and noted that her buttercream frosting recipes had been laboratory-tested by Microbac Laboratories to meet water-activity and pH requirements. "All items are prepared in my home," Ms. Burton said. Travis Johnston moved to approve the sublease; Gregory Cotman seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Staff will follow up with Ms. Burton on next steps.
