Town officials and members of the Rethink Folly Road steering committee spent a large portion of the meeting reacting to a staff-produced list showing safety items excluded from the townportion of the project after the town voted not to sign the municipal agreement.
Committee members described the list as "pretty shocking" and said it appears to remove sidewalks, bus-stop improvements and certain signal upgrades from sections adjacent to town property. A committee member said the option presented by SCDOT had included all improvements but that the town had selected the "nothing" option for its portion, which led to the exclusions.
Councilwoman (identified in the meeting as a town representative) said the townremained committed to safety even while opposing medians, and that sidewalks and crosswalks are items the town can pursue on its own. She said the town had not intended to pick up the full set of gaps county staff later showed on maps and that the municipal vote reflected concerns medians could worsen safety in adjacent neighborhoods.
Several members urged a follow-up meeting with SCDOT to review the municipal agreement and whether some safety elements could be advanced without the medians. One participant said, "I would absolutely love for a CDOT to come down and let's sit and seriously talk about this and talk about the concerns that the actual citizens who live and drive that road feel."
