Board approves front-stair landing to bring 16 Westland into code

The Old Orchard Beach Board of Appeals voted to approve a front-entrance stair and landing at 16 Westland Avenue that will bring an existing nonconforming set of steps into compliance and create a safer entry.
Applicant Pali Buckett explained the existing stairs are five wooden steps that lack a landing and said she wants to reorient the steps so they lead to the driveway and provide a landing to make carrying groceries and other loads safer. Buckett told the board she purchased the house last year and that the current configuration predated her ownership.
Board members discussed parking impacts if the stairs were moved toward the driveway but concluded the proposed design improves egress without increasing street-facing encroachment. A motion to approve the requested relief passed on roll call with all members voting in favor.
Next steps: staff will issue permits consistent with the approved plan and the applicant may proceed with construction under required inspections.
