Commission OKs LATCF funds to buy encrypted radios for sheriff’s deputies

The Box Elder County Commission approved the use of Local Allocation of American Rescue Plan/Local Assistance and Tribal Consistency Funds (LATCF) to purchase encrypted handheld radios for the Sheriff’s Office.
County Auditor Shirlene Larsen reported the LATCF balance of $682,677.98. Chief Deputy Cade Palmer said some neighboring emergency entities are moving to Weber Dispatch while Box Elder would remain on local dispatch; he recommended upgrading handheld radios to encrypted models so deputies can communicate with Brigham City, Perry and Tremonton-Garland agencies. Palmer said that 33 radios for patrol and detectives need immediate replacement (about $18,000) and that about 60 more radios will need updates in the future. Commissioner Lee Perry moved to fund the purchase from LATCF; Commissioner Boyd Bingham seconded and the motion carried unanimously on roll-call vote.
The county record shows the appropriation covered immediate encrypted-handheld replacements; further procurement and inventory work will determine timing for additional radio upgrades.
