Baseline Road safety audit prompts lane‑drop design; city to bid Hawk signal project this fall

Council heard details on three connected safety and pedestrian projects that staff plan to advance this year. Casey Carlson highlighted a Baseline Road selection for asphalt improvements and described a road safety audit that recommended reducing driving lane widths to slow traffic and create space for bike lanes and buffers; staff is also planning a lane drop at Baseline & 95th as part of the restriping.
Counselors also heard that the Hawk signal project just east of Baseline and Gold Hill is at 100% plans and staff hopes to put it out to bid with construction starting this fall. “We’re just wrapping up the 100% plans for this project right now and are hoping to get it out to bid with construction starting this fall,” staff said. Another highlighted project is a missing‑links HSIP (Highway Safety Improvement Program) grant‑funded effort totaling approximately $500,000 with a 10% city match; staff said about $250,000 of the grant will go to construction with earlier funds directed to design and construction management.
Councilors asked about specific photo/wayfinding signage and whether there will be public education on Hawk signals; staff said drivers often have informational boards and that the city will produce educational materials for pedestrians.
