City staff updated the City Council on July 28 about progress implementing Lafayette’s multimodal transportation plan (MMTP), adopted in late 2023 and staged in five‑year phases. Jeff Arthur, the city’s public works director, said the plan identified 38 near‑term projects for 2024–2028 and that “since implementation began in 2024, the city has completed or is in progress with over 30 of these 38 projects.”
Staff emphasized the regional dimension of Lafayette’s transportation network and the need to coordinate with outside agencies. Arthur said Lafayette sees “about 120,000 vehicles pass through Lafayette every day,” explaining why the city must work closely with CDOT and neighboring jurisdictions as it prioritizes safety and asset preservation. Leslie Dewey, the engineering capital projects manager, told the council that near‑term priorities identified by public engagement included off‑street multiuse paths, repairing broken or missing sidewalks, and adding or enhancing on‑street bike lanes.
The MMTP also calls for a near‑term funding need of roughly $10 million focused largely on signal and signage maintenance, striping, and asset management programs. Staff noted the MMTP provides project prioritization for mid‑ and long‑term horizons and includes a backlog of projects beyond 2048. Councilors pressed staff on how the city will communicate PCI (pavement condition index) results to residents; staff said GIS layers and public‑facing graphics are being prepared for web and social outreach.
