County and Valley Stewardship Network sign MOU to pursue prairie planting on 27 acres

The Vernon County Board approved a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Valley Stewardship Network to pursue prairie planting on approximately 27 acres of county-owned land. The MOU authorizes VSN to apply for Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) funding and sets out roles for site preparation, planting, monitoring and maintenance.
Under the MOU, VSN will apply for EQIP funding as a tenant of Vernon County and will complete compliance paperwork, purchase seed and conduct ecological monitoring; Vernon County will perform site preparation, seed planting and follow-up maintenance. The agreement states that if NRCS payments are made to VSN, 30% will be allocated to Vernon County to support staff or contractor time and equipment costs. The MOU will become effective upon execution and runs through Nov. 1, 2029 unless extended or revoked.
