Building department sees permit growth, reports nearly 1,400 inspections in June and seeks new inspectors

Chief Building Official Matt Strehle told commissioners that year-to-date residential permits were up 5% and commercial permits were up 6% compared with the prior year. He reported total receipts were up $152,000 year-over-year and that the department conducted nearly 1,400 inspections in June, compared with about 1,200 in June of the prior year. Strehle said the department is recruiting additional full-time inspectors and plans to redeploy some field staff into residential plan review to address workload.
Commissioner Hambley noted that 22 of the 38 new home permits issued in June were in Montville Township and that higher-end subdivisions such as Sharon Falls and Cobblestone are raising average home-cost figures. Strehle confirmed Montville was the only jurisdiction with double-digit new home permits for the month.
