County advances revised solid-waste plan; Brunswick waiver excluded, public comment set for Aug2DSept

Commissioner Stephen D. Hambley reported the Solid Waste Policy Committee voted 4 to 1 to advance the county's preferred solid-waste plan option, which would not provide a waiver to the City of Brunswick. The board said the final document will be posted to the county website, distributed to jurisdictions, made available at libraries, and accompanied by a public notice and executive summary. A public comment period will run from August through the end of September.
Hambley told the board that sit-down meetings had been held with Brunswick's vice mayor and city manager prior to the recent reading, but that Brunswick subsequently directed future communications through legal counsel. Hambley said the county remains open to direct dialogue but that further discussions must follow the public process. The county plans outreach materials and an executive summary to help jurisdictions and residents review the lengthy plan.
