Staff recommends adopting Ohio Fire Code locally; ordinance to Monday

City staff recommended that Huber Heights adopt the Ohio Fire Code locally, allowing the city to perform routine enforcement and inspections rather than relying on external processes. Staff filling in for Chief Keith explained the code is reviewed on a five‑year cycle and the last local change was in 2017; the online state version is currently available and printed copies are expected by July 2026. "The benefit of us adopting the fire code here locally is it allows for us to do routine enforcement and handle that locally," the staff member said.

Council discussed the ordinance scheduling and agreed to put it on Monday's agenda as an ordinance requiring two readings rather than emergency adoption. Staff noted inspectors have completed required training and that adopting the state code locally is consistent with prior practice.
