Commissioner Abrahamson presses pay-by-attendance policy; motion fails for lack of second

Commissioner Abrahamson urged the board to consider withholding pay from commissioners who do not attend meetings, citing calls from constituents about Commissioner Poitra’s absence.
Abrahamson asked whether an elected commissioner who ‘‘is paid to attend meetings and you do not attend or do your duties do you think you should be paid for it,’’ and moved to adopt a pay-by-attendance policy. The motion received no second and therefore failed. The board agreed to table a wider policy review on commissioner attendance to the next meeting.
Staff from the Rolette shop — Mark Allery and Gary Davis — told the commissioners they had not seen or heard from Commissioner Poitra while he has been a supervisor for the Rolette area. Commissioner Poitra responded in the meeting, "I was once but I do other stuff and I talked to Allen to do the Road Crew," indicating he has delegated some local duties.
Chair Henry LaRocque noted commissioners are elected to serve the public in meetings and the board left the issue for further review at the next regular session. No formal disciplinary or payment adjustments were made at this meeting.
