Vernon County Board adopts 2025 budget and sets 2024 tax levy of $12,092,055

The Vernon County Board adopted the 2025 budget and set the 2024 tax levy at $12,092,055 on Nov. 12 by roll-call vote of 18–1. Supervisor Jacobson moved and Supervisor Henry seconded the motion to adopt Resolution 2024-56.
The public hearing that opened at 9:06 a.m. gave the public and supervisors an opportunity to hear Administrative Coordinator Cassie Hanan’s presentation of the proposed spending plan. Hanan noted higher equalized values (up about 11%) and said a prior apportionment error of roughly $2.2 million had driven last year’s mil-rate changes. The proposed budget includes a 1% COLA and an additional 0.5% adjustment for employees "in the range," and health-insurance premiums are projected to fall about 5% in 2025. Brian Ekern, vice-president of the Vernon County Historical Society, thanked the Board for continued financial support, saying that support "makes it possible for the Society to function effectively."
Board members questioned the budget’s reliance on debt for capital projects, but Hanan reminded the Board that any new debt adopted as a separate action would not affect the 2024 tax bills because repayment is scheduled to begin in 2026. The resolution adopting the budget and levy carried 18 ayes and 1 nay (Supervisor Muller opposed).
