Committee discusses cruiser replacement timing and doubts about hybrids for patrol cars

The Capital Improvements Program Committee discussed the town’s cruiser replacement schedule and vehicle-selection considerations after Police Chief Chris Bean presented updated estimates.
Bean confirmed the 2026 cruiser replacement cost at $79,000 and said estimates for 2027 are about $79,000–$80,000; he said he will provide the committee with a more detailed life-expectancy and replacement-year schedule. When asked whether the department had considered hybrid cruisers, Bean said the dealers the department uses do not recommend hybrids or full electric cruisers because of special-order status and delivery timing. Committee members also raised concerns about charger installation, vehicle assignment and the potential impact of extended charging time on shift schedules.
