Police chief seeks warrant article to replace obsolete radios, estimates $110,000

Chief Chris Bean told the Capital Improvements Program Committee that the department’s portable and mobile radios were last replaced with grant funding and that “these reprogrammed radios are obsolete and could crash at any time.” He said grant opportunities for radio replacement are no longer available and proposed seeking Select Board approval for a warrant article to fund a full replacement, estimating the cost at roughly $110,000.
Bean said the plan, if approved, would be to deposit funds into the Police Equipment Capital Reserve Fund so the department can build a reserve for future radio purchases. Town Administrator Christina Goodwin asked whether the department had considered leasing radios; Bean said leasing “might be good for this year.” The committee instructed staff to update the CIP spreadsheet to reflect a Police Equipment Capital Reserve Fund line for radios and weapons.
