The council approved a motion to authorize a funding request to the Lake Jackson Development Corporation (LJDC) to reallocate up to $200,000 from completed‑under‑budget projects to cover repairs to the recreation center chiller. Council member Buell made the motion and Council member Spohler seconded; the motion passed by voice vote.
Facilities and parks staff described the chiller history: the unit was installed in late 2013 and parts of its protective coating have deteriorated, causing condenser coils to corrode and some compressors to fail. Staff said one compressor remains original and that several compressors have already been replaced. The facility operates for many hours each week and a full replacement would have a turnaround time of roughly 48–52 weeks, so staff proposed interim repairs to extend the unit's service until a planned HVAC replacement project can proceed.
"They're disintegrating," facilities staff said of the condenser coils, describing that repeated washing and exposure to the Gulf Coast environment has accelerated wear. Council voted to proceed with the requested reallocation so the repairs can occur without delaying other budgeted work beyond the limits specified (total expenditures not to exceed $200,000).
Next steps: staff will submit the reallocation request to LJDC and carry out the repairs; capital replacement planning for full HVAC replacement remains on the long‑range CIP schedule.
