Residents press Carver County on property valuations; board directs staff to follow up

Pam Understad of Norwood Young America and Tom Desatell of Chaska spoke during public comment about recent property valuation decisions. Understad said deeded acres on the property tax statement — not the online property search — reflect the accurate measure of acreage and that comparables used in her assessment ignored recent improvements on other properties. "I wanna remind everybody that they work for us," she said, urging commissioner support in discussions with assessors.
Tom Desatell described leaving a board of equalization hearing under the impression a 1.1M valuation would hold, then later receiving notice of a higher valuation. He said he had emailed the board and received no timely follow-up. Commissioners acknowledged these as individual grievances, said the assessor's office should be the primary forum for resolution, and asked staff to review whether the equalization decision could be reopened or otherwise clarified for constituents. The board did not vote to reopen any cases during the meeting.
