State BHACC seeks local input on federal block-grant spending and service gaps

The Washington State Behavioral Health Advisory Council (BHACC) presented its role and solicited local input on how to prioritize federal block-grant dollars. Nathan Lusk, the council coordinator, told the Spokane board the council "writes recommendations to SAMHSA" and sits under the Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery at the Health Care Authority.
BHACC vice cochair Kiki Sarantis described the council as federally mandated and responsible for advising the state on Mental Health Block Grant (MHBG) and Substance Use Prevention, Treatment and Recovery Services (SUPTRS) funding. "Our primary sources of funding include the mental health MHBG and substance use prevention treatment and recovery supports block grants administered by SAMHSA," Sarantis said. The presenters encouraged written responses to three specific feedback questions that will inform formal state recommendations.
