Town highway staff updated the Select Board on hydraulic studies and culvert options for several town roads.
Staff (Speaker 3) reported that four hydraulic studies are in progress in town, with Mountain View Road and Penn Road specifically requested for study. The staff relayed engineer recommendations that for one site a replacement culvert might need to be "8 to 10 feet" wide and 4–5 feet tall, and described alternatives including a box culvert, a squash culvert, or a wet crossing where stone is placed in the roadway. "He said 8 to 10 feet," the staff member said when quoting the engineer's guidance.
The board discussed liability and whether the town should undertake work outside the right of way, concerns about safety for winter use (snowmobile trail), and lower-cost temporary alternatives such as skidder bridges (noting a reported life expectancy of roughly five to ten years). Staff said they would await written recommendations from the engineer and that additional grant possibilities might be investigated for homeowner-level projects.
