County attorney proposes reissuance criteria for short-term rental permits; inspection responsibility flagged

County Attorney Kent Snider presented proposed edits to the draft Short Term Rental Ordinance during Old Business at the Jan. 20, 2026 work meeting.
Board members discussed whether short-term rental permits should automatically terminate after one year or be reissued following a board review under set compliance criteria. Mr. Snider suggested that, rather than requiring a full reapplication, the board could adopt review criteria that allow eligible permits to be reissued. The board also raised how annual fire inspections will be handled and who performs them; Mr. Snider said owners should be responsible for providing inspection information. Board Chair Chad Reed was asked to follow up on inspection logistics, and Carrie Poulsen was asked to revise the ordinance draft to reflect the board's direction and return the changes at the next meeting.
No vote or adoption of the ordinance occurred at this meeting; the discussion produced direction to staff and the county attorney to produce an updated draft that addresses reissue criteria, owner responsibilities for inspection documentation, and coordination between permit renewals and annual business licenses.
