Several family members used the committee's public-comment period to describe deaths in custody and to urge the legislature to make oversight produce concrete results.
Tim Mathis said his son "was killed by the ADOC 2 years and 1 month ago" and accused the system of continued drug use, deaths, and insufficient medical care. A different commenter, Miss Baker, recounted that her brother was found unresponsive after transfer to Bullock Correctional Facility and that an autopsy was not performed: "They put natural causes on his death certificate... How can you determine cause of death without an autopsy or a toxicology report, which is still sitting in the attorney general's office as of February 8," she said. Families pressed the committee to help obtain records and toxicology results.
Julis Led Godwin and Clara Brooks described long trips for visits, the emotional toll on children and concerns for whistleblowers inside facilities. Julis Led Godwin cited external litigation costs: "Reports from No More Alabama campaign document more than $68,000,000 spent since 2020 defending lawsuits and paying settlements related to violence and neglect in our prisons," she said, and urged lawmakers to redirect resources toward rehabilitation services.
Lawmakers thanked speakers and acknowledged progress in some administrative areas but did not announce specific new remedies during the meeting. Several speakers asked the committee to pursue records access and transparent reporting as immediate next steps.
