Town Manager Suzanne Harvey said the fire engine request seeks $1.3 million in federal funding; she estimated the town's local match would be about $200,000–$300,000, making the total purchase roughly $1.5 million. “The fire truck is important enough that we should submit it to both” the congressman and the senator, Harvey said, explaining she submitted a retroactive request to Congressman Ciscomani and asked Council permission to submit the same request to Senator Mark Kelly to increase chances of approval.
Harvey said replacing the aging apparatus matters for public safety and for the town's ISO rating, which affects resident and business insurance costs. She noted that USDA Community Facilities rules and matching funds would be part of any award, and that procurement and delivery timelines extend beyond grant approval.
Council approved staff's submission and prioritization of the fire engine ahead of water meter upgrades. Staff told the Council they will plan for the required local match and follow federal and USDA procedures if funding is awarded.
