Watonwan County approves bridge and road contracts, equipment purchases and vendor selections

ST. JAMES, Minn. — At its April 7 meeting the Watonwan County Board approved multiple public-works contracts and procurement items for 2026.
County Engineer Michael McCarty presented bids for Bridge 83502 replacement; the board accepted the low bid from M & K Bridge Construction Inc. of Walnut Grove for $650,247.97. For Hammond Highway Paving (Project SP 083-613-020) the board approved the low bid from Ulland Brothers Inc. for $4,249,538.27. The board also adopted Resolution 26-9 creating a bridge replacement priority list for the next five years and requested financial assistance for eligible approach grading and engineering costs.
On procurement matters the board approved a quotation from L&S Construction for gravel supply, authorized purchase of an HP scanner for the Recorder’s office for $7,069.00, and approved purchasing a 2026 Chevrolet Equinox at State Cooperative pricing of $28,453.40, authorizing staff member Bryan Rathman to contact local dealerships for potentially lower quotes and to execute purchase if a lower quote is found; if not, staff may purchase through North County GM at the State bid price. Bid tabulations and per-ton gravel rates were reviewed in the meeting packet.
