Council orders demolition of two dilapidated homes after staff inspections

The Gun Barrel City council voted July 28 to declare two properties unsafe and ordered their demolition after building-official presentations.
Shannon Wiggins, the city's building superintendent, said staff had had no contact with the owners of 160 Box Road for several years, provided photos showing substandard conditions, and recommended the structure be declared unsafe with an estimated demolition contractor cost of $5,600 to be paid from the city's demolition funds. Council members moved and seconded the action and voted to adopt the demolition order.
Wiggins reported the 304 Valley View property had last contact with staff in 2022, sat gutted without required permits and had an estimated demolition cost of $5,300. Council voted to declare that structure unsafe and to adopt an abatement and demolition order as well. Both orders were read into the record and approved by unanimous voice vote.
The mayor and staff said the work will include filling holes and smoothing the site after demolition; no specific contractor was named during the meeting and the city said funds to cover the contractor estimates were already budgeted.
