Wilkes County Child Fatality Prevention Team reports 12 deaths reviewed in 2025; no system problems identified

The Wilkes County Child Fatality Prevention Team presented its 2025 annual report on March 5, saying the multidisciplinary team met four times and reviewed 12 child fatalities.
Health Director Rachel Willard, who chairs the team, said the deaths reviewed included five perinatal-condition deaths, two deaths from birth defects, one accident, one respiratory failure, one illness-related death and other/unspecified causes. The team used an escalated review for one case and performed one non-mandatory review. Willard told the Board the team identified no system problems in the cases reviewed and noted improved communication among agencies.
Willard noted the statutory basis for the multidisciplinary reviews under state law (Article 62 of the North Carolina statutes) and said the report would be forwarded to the county Board of Health and the Board of Commissioners as required. She asked that the contents remain confidential with no identifying information disclosed.
