Somerset County approves seven corrections hires as jail continues to board inmates from Waldo County

The Somerset County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the hiring of seven corrections officers (Resolution 26-13). The hires listed in the minutes are Nikkita DaRosa, Steven McMullen, Kevin Chaffin, Alton Urquhart, Amber Kenney, Cameron Ellis and Gunner Buker.
Jail Administrator Michael Welch told the board the facility is currently boarding 32 inmates from Waldo County (Waldo prepaid the first quarter boarding rate) and is housing 32 federal inmates; Welch said the jail has a high attrition rate and he does not expect the new hires to cause the jail to exceed budgeted staffing levels for the year. Commissioner Don Skillings raised a concern that hiring this number of officers could strain next year’s budget, a point Welch addressed by citing attrition and expected staffing turnover.
The board also accepted the resignation of Corrections Officer Dale Richardson (Resolution 26-11) and approved mileage for commissioners for the second quarter of FY2026 (Resolution 26-12).
