Celia Viesselman and Pat Branstad of Climate Smart St. James presented preliminary findings of an organic-waste feasibility study to the Watonwan County Board on March 17, identifying a dumpster-collection system as the most viable option and noting a potential state grant and partners including county solid waste and Region Nine.
Viesselman and Pat Branstad said the dumpster approach best matched local collection patterns but cautioned that staffing, contamination of organics with noncompostables, and long-term funding remain open questions. The board did not direct staff to implement the program and will revisit the proposal at a future meeting.
