Supervisor Alfred G. Futrell requested review of the county's landscaping and grounds-maintenance contract with Schultz Lawnscapes of Waverly. The contract, which runs July 2025 through June 2026, covers eight convenience centers, the courthouse complex, animal shelter, Waverly office building and the Jarratt senior center at a total cost of $71,780. Staff told the Board that Schultz remains managed and located in Waverly though it is now connected to a national private equity firm.
Board members discussed putting the next contract out for bid and whether local firms could provide the service. Supervisor Futrell asked about the contract amount and expiration date; staff confirmed the contract ends in June and recommended bidding. Members also discussed the possibility of county employees performing lawn care and using Sheriff's Office inmate labor for snow removal at the complex; Administrator Douglas advised against bringing services in-house. No final procurement decision was made and staff will prepare materials for a competitive bid process ahead of contract expiration.
