Christie Walden, a volunteer at the Bertie County Humane Society, raised concerns about the request for proposal for the county's new animal shelter, arguing that listed kennel dimensions (4x5 feet for indoor kennels and small outdoor runs) are insufficient for many large dogs and would impair their adoptability. "If you're looking to just store dogs for 3 days until you can kill them, it's a perfect shelter," Walden said, urging the board to prioritize exercise and adoptability when finalizing designs.
Walden recommended keeping the old facility as an outdoor exercise area (she estimated it at about 30x40 feet) if the new build cannot accommodate adequate exercise yards. Commissioners thanked her for the input and indicated staff will consider her concerns as the RFP process continues, but no formal modification of the RFP was adopted at the meeting.
