Supervisor Thomas W. Baicy asked the County Administrator to develop options and cost estimates for restarting recycling services at county convenience centers, including collection of appliances, metals and furniture. Administrator Richard Douglas reported he had met with Waste Management and visited Isle of Wight recycling centers and said that restarting single-stream collection focused on metals could run "at approximately $1,200 per year." The Board asked that the issue be scheduled for a work session to review service levels, container locations and potential service contracts.
Members discussed practical issues at convenience sites including oversized trash, snow removal, worker training on acceptable materials, and contract changes after company sale. No formal decision was made; staff will prepare options and associated costs for the Board to consider at a future work session.
