Bertie County commissioners move to assume control of Social Services Board and set public hearing

“I move for the Bertie County Board of Commissioners to assume direct control of any activity heretofore conducted by the Bertie County Social Service Board by the adoption of a resolution assuming and conferring upon the Bertie County Board of County Commissioners all powers, responsibilities, and duties of the Bertie County Social Services Board, which will be dissolved, and that a public hearing be held by this board pursuant to 30 days notice ... being held on the November 2025 at 06:00PM,” the chair said while placing the motion.
The chair framed the move as authorized under North Carolina statute 153A-77, which the chair read aloud as the statutory basis for assuming control of a commission or board. The chair said the board had “given careful consideration” and that “we just feel like, we had concerns, and this was the best action for us to take at this time,” and added that confidentiality limits how much could be disclosed publicly now.
A board member announced they would excuse themselves from the vote because they are a sitting member of the Social Services Board. The motion was seconded on the record and advanced by voice vote when the chair called for those in favor to say “aye.” The board then moved into a closed session citing North Carolina general statutes governing closed meetings before returning to open session.
County staff also confirmed the board welcomed Tanya Davis as an official employee of Bertie County government during the meeting. The resolution to assume control will be considered again after the scheduled public hearing in November 2025.
Next steps: the board will publish 30 days' notice in a newspaper of general circulation in Bertie County and hold the public hearing on the date announced; the board will consider adoption of the resolution afterward.
