Code board grants waves of compliance extensions and continues fines on long-running cases

The Fort Lauderdale Code Enforcement Board spent most of its July 28 docket considering permit-related delays, frequently granting extensions while noting repeated prior appearances.
Across the meeting the board routinely approved extensions ranging from 28 to 127 days, and in some cases up to 182 days for a new owner who said she inherited unpermitted work. For example, the board gave a 56‑day extension to multiple respondents where permits were in active review and a 28‑day extension where permits were awaiting issuance. In other matters — where prior hearings showed little or no documented progress — the board found violations and ordered compliance deadlines with daily fines to begin if work was not completed.
The board also authorized fines to continue accruing in long-standing files. The city asked to impose $3,400 in continuing fines on one property (owner listed as Carol Salazar) and sought higher daily fines or mandatory hearings on other repeat noncompliance matters. Board members repeatedly balanced the practical need for time to secure permits against the record of repeated returns without documented progress, and in several cases required mandatory reappearances at the Sept. 22 or Aug. 25 hearing dates.
