Work session adds three names to Board of Elections appointment list and reviews department updates

At the Nov. 25 work session the county manager recommended Nancy Hoard, Valerie Lassiter and Crystal Walker for the new Board of Elections; the board added the names to the Dec. 3 regular meeting agenda. During the Nov. 25 work session Vice‑Chairman Timothy Biddle presided in Chairman Coffey's absence and the county manager briefed commissioners on departmental matters and proposed items for the Dec. 3 agenda.
County Manager Thomas Weaver explained why the three recommended names were chosen for initial appointment to the new Board of Elections: they are active, have participated in related meetings, and would create staggered term expirations. The manager said the appointments must be made before Jan. 1, 2025, to comply with the new charter language, and that one appointment will be up for replacement in a year. Vice‑Chairman Biddle and County Clerk Lisa Bickel participated in the discussion; resident Queen Spivey asked about prior selection methods and Bickel explained earlier processes tied to the grand jury and probate court.
The session also included updates: recreation registration and youth sports, Christmas events including a tree lighting and parade, road maintenance progress on Riverbend Road and Hwy 137, and temporary recycling center holiday schedule changes. The proposed BOE appointees were added to the Dec. 3 agenda as voting items.
