Board weighs moving graduation to avoid conflicts with regional athletics

The Williams Bay School District board discussed whether to change the traditional Friday night high‑school graduation to avoid conflicts with regional and state athletic competitions.
"My personal opinion is that is not fair to our students to put them in that predicament where they have to choose between...the personal achievement and being in their high school graduation," Doctor White said, recounting instances where students missed track opportunities or chose graduation over qualifying for state. He said the administration is considering alternate dates, including Sunday, May 23, and that while a Sunday ceremony is not his preference he would consider it if it allows students to participate in both events.
Board members proposed other options — moving graduation earlier in the week, Thursday night, or an afternoon ceremony — but noted each shift can create new conflicts with other sports. Trustees asked the administration to work on a recommendation, weigh calendar impacts and communicate with families before a final decision is made.
