Board establishes Fire Commission, names members and a commissioner representative

The Bertie County Board of Commissioners on Nov. 3 moved to create a Fire Commission associated with the newly formed fire‑service district and to appoint eight members recommended by the fire association. The commission structure calls for three firefighters, three citizens (one from each station area), the fire marshal and the president of the fire association as ex‑officio members.
Chair read the recommended names into the record and commissioners approved the slate by voice vote. Appointed firefighter and citizen representatives included Daniel Mizell (firefighter, 40 station), Randall Walston (citizen, 40 station), Kenneth Perry (firefighter, 50 station), Michael Conwell (citizen, 50 station), Joseph Pittman III (firefighter, 60 station) and Catherine Outlaw (citizen, 60 station). Commissioner Sanders was nominated and approved to serve as the board’s representative to the new Fire Commission.
Separately, the board approved Vice Chair Hoggart to serve as the county representative to the Albemarle Regional Health Services board, replacing the outgoing commissioner whose term was nearing expiration.
Why it matters: establishing the Fire Commission formalizes a governance structure for the fire service district and creates a mechanism for local firefighter and citizen input on fire services and budgets.
What’s next: the new Fire Commission will draft bylaws, assume duties described in the county packet, and the county’s representative will attend Albemarle Regional Health Board meetings on the county’s behalf.
