County IT director details upgrades: access control, cloud backups and website rebuild

Joe Wilkes, the county’s IT director, gave a progress update on the department’s recent projects funded by county allocations.
He said the county installed new network switches and a network access control system that blocks unknown devices from connecting automatically: "We now have network access control... it automatically blocks that port until we go in and adjust it." Wilkes also described a cloud migration for key servers, a new backup solution to improve recovery from ransomware, an antivirus/endpoint monitoring service with 24/7 SOC monitoring, and ongoing work with CivicPlus on a new county website. He noted negotiations with a new fiber provider that could offer substantially higher speeds for similar cost.
Commissioners commended the work and asked staff to continue looking for cost‑effective audio improvements for meeting spaces and to maintain coordination with other departments on digital projects.
