Commission hears plan for municipalities to opt into Eaton County zoning

Jason Ball described a pathway that would let municipalities that previously were outside Eaton County's zoning jurisdiction elect to join the county code if their governing bodies choose to do so.
Ball identified specific places the draft maps contemplate: the city of Olivette and the villages of Vermontville, Mulligan, Sunfield and Bellevue. He said the county's composite future land use map had left some of those municipalities 'grayed out' because they previously were not included; the update will provide new classifications and a clear mechanism for those jurisdictions to opt in if they desire.
Staff (S6) clarified later in the meeting that some places on the list had reached out to the department to express interest, while others had not. "Hamlin Township has not shown interest," the staff member said, and Ball confirmed the county intends to finalize maps with those that have expressed interest first before pursuing maps for others.
Ball cautioned that joining county zoning would require an act by each municipality's elected body — for example, the village council or township board would need to repeal their local ordinance and then adopt the county's code if they decide to opt in.
