Several residents told the select board the marked crossing on Route 16 is hazardous and that the recent removal of signs while leaving stripe markings creates confusion and liability. Carol Lovely, a Chikora resident, described seeing brakes screech and said, "something needs to be done urgently," arguing that waiting until the next town meeting could leave pedestrians exposed.
Board members and staff cited DOT safety guidance and insurer input: if the town does not repaint and maintain markings annually, insurance and DOT guidance favor removing signs or installing rapid-flashing beacons to reduce liability. The board asked residents to produce a documented proposal and vendor quotes if they want the town to sponsor a warrant article; otherwise the community may fundraise to install the beacons sooner.
