Mayor pro tem urges pilot of AI to speed routine permitting; council directs staff to study it

Mayor Pro Tem Sam Henderson proposed a directive July 28 asking the city manager and Community Development staff to pilot an artificial intelligence tool to handle routine, lower-level permitting tasks and paperwork.
Henderson said the pilot would help staff focus on more complex reviews, using an AI tool for repetitive approvals such as garage-sale permits. “If we could sanction a pilot to work with community development, the city manager's office to figure out if we can, develop and deploy, an AI tool to address some of the rudimentary tasks of permit approval,” Henderson said, adding the proposal “is not to replace any staff.” Council member Rodney Tanaka seconded the directive; Henderson said he would provide a written directive to staff.
The item was presented as a director’s request rather than an ordinance or immediate policy change. Staff will receive the written directive and follow up on the pilot parameters and scope.
