Council selects Rodney Tanaka as Gardena mayor pro tem

The Gardena City Council unanimously approved a nomination to select Council member Rodney Tanaka as the city’s mayor pro tem, the council announced during its July 28 meeting.
Mayor Pro Tem Sam Henderson nominated Tanaka, saying, “I’d like to nominate council member Rodney Tanaka as mayor Pro Tem incoming.” The motion was seconded and carried on a 5-0 roll call. Mayor Serta told the council that the selected member will be seated as mayor pro tem at the Aug. 11, 2026 council meeting.
The reorganization is part of the council’s annual rotation of mayor pro tem appointments. City staff said there is no financial impact tied to the appointment. The council made the selection during agenda item 8a after public comment was closed on the matter.
The council’s recorded vote was: Serta, Henderson, Tanaka, Francis and Fukasawa — all voting yes. The city clerk confirmed the selection will take effect at the next council meeting on Aug. 11.
