Grayson County emergency services reports third EMT class of 2026, high call volumes year to date

Barnes said the county is holding a third EMT class in 2026 with six students expected to graduate in June; she noted a prior class had nine students with six completing certification, three of whom were deputies. County Administrator Stephen A. Boyer provided call-volume data, reporting 2,398 calls year to date and that county responders handled 1,906 of those calls; fire service logged 476 calls and responded to 464.
Barnes also distributed handouts about volunteer opportunities and praised interagency coordination at a recent accident/hazardous‑materials incident at Forest Lane/Route 89 and Galax, noting multiple agencies worked together on scene. The Board received the report; no formal action was required.
