Maurice Kerland, Miramar's Washington, D.C., lobbyist, told the commission that Miramar has a track record of securing federal community project funding and competitive grants for local projects. He said that, while the federal fiscal situation is uncertain and a shutdown was possible, Miramar's projects are well positioned with members of Congress.
Kerland noted specific pending appropriations: about $1,000,000 included in the House transportation/HUD bill for Pembroke Road widening and an additional $850,000 for the Miramar youth center. "There was $1,000,000 for your Pembroke Road widening project," Kerland said, and he credited both members of Congress and the city's grants work for prior funding success.
Kerland also summarized other federal developments of interest to the city, including renewed attention to opportunity zones, new market tax credits and a bipartisan housing bill intended to incentivize affordable-housing supply increases. He urged commissioners to view federal appropriations as a parallel track to state member projects and to keep lobbying teams informed on city priorities.
Commissioners thanked the federal lobbying team and asked staff to keep the commission updated on appropriations outcomes and next steps for grant management.
